FAQs
Q. How can ID Alarm® help to prevent medical ID theft?
A. Health care providers may send a notification to an ID owner based on their public or private health card number, or other ID numbers presented. By extending ID Alarm® services to insured individuals, public and private health insurers can dramatically decrease the rate of medical ID theft. Insurers can also integrate with ID Alarm® on a system-to-system level and send notifications when claims are processed or services requested.
Q. I recently presented my ID at an organization and did not get an ID Alarm® - why?
A. The organization has likely not yet heard of ID Alarm® and how it can help them prevent fraud and reassure their customers. You can help us get the word out by asking them why they don't tell you when your ID is being used.
Q. What if my ID is used in a different country?
A. An ID Alarm® can be sent to almost all government or financial ID issued around the world. If the organization is an ID Alarm® subscriber you will receive your ID Alarm® in the usual manner.
Q. I already have a credit monitoring service from the credit bureau. Is ID Alarm® different?
A. Yes, in many ways. ID Alarm® covers both credit and non-credit uses of your ID. There is typically a 24-hour delay before getting your credit monitoring notice. Your notices are not ID specific – you don't know which ID was used to commit fraud and is now a high risk ID. To dispute changes to your credit you must first contact the credit bureau, which then contacts the lender. Credit bureaus are nationally based and cannot inform you of ID misuse outside your country.
Q. I already have a service from Lifelock or Debix – Is ID Alarm® different?
A. Yes, in many ways. These services are based on the credit reporting system and cannot cover non-credit uses of your ID. They also are not ID specific and therefore do not tell you which ID has been misused and is now a high risk ID. They are also nationally based and cannot inform you of ID misuse outside the country where they operate.
Q. I have ID theft insurance – do I still need ID Alarm®?
A. Yes. ID theft insurance is designed to reimburse ID theft victims. ID Alarm® is designed to stop ID theft – before it happens.
Q. I don’t have a cell phone – how will I get my message?
A. You will always receive your message to your online account and to your designated email address.
Q. I don't have access to a computer – how can I register my ID?
A. If you can't get access to a computer through a friend or relative, you may ask an attorney or other trusted professional to register and flag your ID for you.
Q. What is an ID data breach and how can ID Alarm® help me get notified of a data breach?
A. An ID data breach occurs when ID stored by organizations is stolen by hackers, accidentally lost by employees, or when insiders purposely sell the data to fraudsters. ID Alarm® is a very convenient way for organizations to send you a breach notification so that you can take appropriate action and change the status of the ID to lost or stolen. Also, breached organizations may not have your current mailing address or phone number – addresses change, ID numbers generally do not.
Q. Will I get my ID Alarm® when away from home or out of the country?
A. Yes. Provided your cell phone service is active you will always receive a text message. You can also check your online account and designated email for new messages.
Q. Should I include ID Alarm® as part of my estate planning?
A. Yes. Your username and password should be given to your executor so that they can change the status of your ID to deceased and continue your protection after you are gone.
